The story of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer was written in 1939 by Robert L. May, a copywriter for the Chicago-based Montgomery Ward department stores, as a promotional gift for the store’s customers. The stores had bought and distributed coloring books every Christmas and saw writing their own story as a way to save money.

Montgomery Ward distributed 2.4 million copies of the Rudolph booklet in 1939. A total of 6 million copies had been given out by the end of 1946, even though wartime paper shortages restricted printing. Rudolph’s story was made into a song when May’s brother-in-law, songwriter Johnny Marks, developed the lyrics and melody for it. Marks’ musical version was first recorded by Gene Autry in 1949, selling 2 million copies that year.

Run, Rudolph, Run, sometimes referred to as “Run, Run, Rudolph” is a Christmas song popularized by Chuck Berry and written by Johnny Marks and Marvin Brodie and published by St. Nicholas Music. The song was first recorded by Berry in 1958 and released as Chess Records 1714. It hit number 69 in the Billboard Hot 100 and also made the 1963 UK list, peaking at number 36.

Please Come Home for Christmas is a Christmas song, released in 1960, by the American blues singer and pianist Charles Brown. Hitting Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in December 1961, the tune Brown co-wrote with Gene Redd peaked at position number 76. It appeared on the Christmas Singles chart for nine seasons, hitting number 1 in 1972.

It includes a number of characteristics of Christmas music, such as multiple references in the lyrics to the Christmas season and Christmas traditions, and the use of a Church bell type sound, created using a piano, at the start of the song.

In 1978, the rock band Eagles covered and released the song as a single. Their version of the song peaked at number 18 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.

Happy Xmas is a Christmas song by John Lennon, Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band. It was recorded at Record Plant Studios in New York City in late October of 1971, with the help of producer Phil Spector. It features soaring, heavily echoed vocals, and a sing-along chorus. The children singing in the background were from the Harlem Community Choir and are credited on the song’s single.

The lyric is based on a campaign in late 1969 by John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, who rented billboards and posters in eleven cities around the world that read: “WAR IS OVER! (If You Want It) Happy Christmas from John and Yoko”. The cities included New York, Tokyo, Rome, Athens, Amsterdam, London, Paris, Toronto, and some others. At the time the US was deeply entrenched in the unpopular Vietnam War. The line “War is over, if you want it, war is over, now!”, as sung by the background vocals, was taken directly from the billboards.

The single was released in the US on 6 December 1971, but never charted on the Billboard Hot 100 charts; the UK release was delayed until the following November due to a publishing dispute. Upon release, it reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart. The song was re-released in the UK on 20 December 1980 shortly after John Lennon’s death on 8 December 1980, peaking at number 3.

Mele Kalikimaka is a Christmas song sung as a warm greeting from Hawaii. The song takes its title from the phrase Mele Kalikimaka, derived from the Hawaiian pronunciation of Merry Christmas. The song was written in 1949 by Robert Alex Anderson who is better known to fans of Hawaiian and hapa haole music as R. Alex Anderson.

Decca Records released Bing Crosby’s version of Mele Kalikimaka on 7 September 1950. It was the B-side of that very-forgettable non-hit Poppa Santa Claus.

Though some people think Mele Kalikimaka was released on the B-side of White Christmas, Crosby debuted Irving Berlin’s  White Christmas on his NBC radio show, the Kraft Music Hall, on Christmas Day 1941.

Last Christmas is a Christmas song by British pop duo Wham, released on Epic Records in 1984, on a double A-side with Everything She Wants. It was written by George Michael, one half of the duo. The song has been covered by many artists throughout the years. The single sold well over a million copies and became the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach number 1.

A second re-issue at Christmas 1986 – by which time Wham had split – stalled outside the top 40. The song gradually sold in Japan, and finally became the best-selling single that did not reach that country’s top 10 chart, selling more than 600,000 copies and peaking on the chart at number 12 in 1992.

The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) is a Christmas song written by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. (a.k.a. David Seville) in 1958. Although it was written and sung by Bagdasarian (in the form of a high-pitched chipmunk voice), the singing credits are given to The Chipmunks, a fictional singing group consisting of three chipmunks by the names of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore.

The song was very successful, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Singles chart, becoming The Chipmunks’ first (and only), as well as David Seville’s second and final, number 1 single. It has the distinction of being the only Christmas record to reach number 1 on the same chart.

The single sold 4.5 million copies, according to Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. Ironically, before the song’s success, The Chipmunk Song was featured on American Bandstand’s “Rate-A-Record” segment and received the lowest possible rating of 35 across the board. The song won three Grammy Awards in 1958: Best comedy performance, Best children’s recording, and Best engineered record (non-classical).

Wonderful Christmastime is a 1979 Christmas song by Paul McCartney. It is one of McCartney’s best known solo songs, and it enjoys significant Christmas time popularity in the UK and other English-speaking countries. The notable synthesizer riff was played on a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, which was also used on Kim Carnes “Bette Davis Eyes” and the Doobie Brothers “What a Fool Believes.”

The song was later added as a bonus track on the CD reissue of Wings Back to the Egg. Although the song did not chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, it reached number 6 in the UK Singles Chart. This rendition of White Christmas was recorded by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters in 1953. Their recording of the song peaked at number 2 on Billboard’s R&B chart in December 1954. The Christmas song received a boost in the early 1990s, when it was prominently featured in the film Home Alone during a scene in which the lead character Kevin is applying his father’s aftershave while lip syncing the lyrics.

White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin for the Movie “Holiday Inn” and recorded by Bing Crosby in 1942, and received the Academy Award in that year. Crosby recorded it again in 1947, and that recording has become the standard. It was also featured in the 1954 movie White Christmas with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen. This song was written by songwriter Johnny Marks, who had already written the Christmas classic Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, a song that proved so popular the stop-motion animators at Rankin-Bass created a half-hour TV special to expand on the song. Ives was brought in for star power, to play the banjo-playing host and narrator, Sam the Snowman, and take over several songs originally slated for the character of Yukon Cornelius.

One was Silver And Gold, and this was the other. The following year, Ives re-recorded all three of these Johnny Marks hits, which Ives had sung in the TV special, but with a more pop feel than in the TV special. He released them all as singles for the 1965 holiday season, capitalizing on their previous successes.

Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers was one of the hottest blues attractions on the West Coast when their recording of Merry Christmas Baby reached position 3 on Billboard’s R and B Juke Box chart during the Christmas of 1947. Guitarist Johnny Moore commandeered an impressive lineup of players for the recording session, including bassist Eddie Williams, guitarist Oscar Moore (then of the King Cole Trio), and singer/pianist Charles Brown.

Merry Christmas Baby is a Christmas song that just about every blues or R and B singer of the past forty years has recorded. This version by BB King would stand up to any of them, and wins my vote as one of the best versions ever.

Mel Torme and Bob Wells were songwriting partners, and used to take turns going over to each others homes to write songs. One particularly hot July day, Mel drove over to Bob’s house in Teluca Lake, Ca., and when he got there he walked into the house, couldn’t find Bob, but found a spiral note pad of paper with some words on it-

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, Yuletide Carols being sung by a choir, folks dressed up like Eskimos.”

When Mel found Bob, he asked him “What’s this?”, and Bob said “it’s so blistering hot here,and thought it would be fun to see if I could write something about a totally different season, the winter season, Christmas season, and see if I could mentally, virtually cool off.” Mel said “not only have you also cooled me off, but I think you’ve got a song here!” And the duo wrote the rest of the song in about 35 minutes.”The Christmas Song” became one of the defining performances of the career of Nat King Cole. He recorded the song at least 3 times of which the 1961 recording is often considered the best.

Rockin Around the Christmas Tree is a Christmas song written by Johnny Marks and recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958. Although released it in both 1958 and again in 1959, it did not sell well until Lee became a popular star in 1960; that Christmas season, it hit number 14 on the Billboard pop chart and turned into a perennial holiday favorite.

Despite her mature-sounding voice, she recorded this song when she was only 14 years old.

In a 2006 interview with the Chicago Tribune, Lee explained that she recorded this in July with Nashville producer Owen Bradley. Lee: “Owen had the studio all freezing cold with the air conditioning, and he had a Christmas tree all set up to kind of get in the mood just a little bit. We had a lot of fun.”

“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” is a Christmas song that was originally written and composed for the 1966 cartoon special “How The Grinch Stole Christmas!”. The lyrics were written by Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, the music was composed by Albert Hague, and the song was performed by Thurl Ravenscroft.

The song’s lyrics describe the Grinch as being foul, bad-mannered and sinister using increasingly creative metaphors and synonyms, beginning with the opening line “you’re a mean one, Mister Grinch”.

Because Ravenscroft was not credited in the closing credits of the special, it is often mistakenly attributed to Boris Karloff, who served as narrator and speaking voice of the Grinch in the special but who himself could not sing. Donde Esta Santa Claus? is a Christmas song by Augie Rios in 1958 which featured the Mark Jeffrey Orchestra. Donde Esta Santa Claus is Spanish for Where Is Santa Claus? It was also covered by actress Charo in 1978 and by the rock band Guster in 2003.

“Hey Santa Claus” was recorded in 1953 and appears on The White Christmas Album. The Moonglows were an influential American R&B and doo-wop group based in Cleveland, Ohio. The original group was composed of Bobby Lester, Harvey Fuqua, Pete Graves and Prentiss Barnes, along with guitarist Billy Johnson.

Originally known as The Crazy Sounds, they were renamed by Cleveland DJ Alan Freed, who was known on the air as Moondog, and who decided to heavily promote the group. Marvin Gaye joined the group in 1958, and they later disbanded in 1960. The hopped-up “Hey Santa Claus” provides ample evidence that the Moonglows could rock with the best of them.

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote “Santa Claus Is Back In Town” for Elvis in 1957 just after they finished working with him on Jailhouse Rock. Elvis’ producers literally called them at the last minute and asked for one song to fill in a Christmas album. The song was allegedly written in 15 minutes.

The character Yukon Cornelius, in the 1964 TV Christmas special “Rudolph the Red–Nosed Reindeer” inspired this song. The special is based on the song by Johnny Marks, which was in turn taken from the 1939 poem of the same title written by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L. May.
